Ink on paper The eagle under Qian Shoutie's brush is a source of many surprises. A black eagle in a nose dive abruptly turns its head skyward, causing an angst in the viewer, thereby imparting a special visual impact that may leave an unforgettable impression. Among contemporary Chinese painters, Qian Shoutie can rightfully claim the purity of his traditional painting techniques and concepts, but who's to say that deep down he is not informed by modern esthetic ideas? The inscription at lower right and the two seal marks at lower left maintain a delicate balance in the composition. |
